WW2 airfields that had proposed plans but never built

I wonder if anyone can help and advise. Is there any way of finding out what airfields were proposed in the early years of the war, but never built, or where alternative locations were chosen instead? I ask because I found a map in a local county archive created by the Air Ministry of a proposed plan for an airfield never built, so has piqued my interest. That's the only info I found, so looking to see what the process was in this proposal - is there any particular way I should search the National Archives for example, or a resource some may know of please?

Interesting.  I know of a few eg Beaulieu, Bisterne, Lymington, Stoney Cross, Holmesley South, Ibsley, Sway, Winkton plus the 'occasional' strip at the bombing target at Ashley Walk and the airfield at Chirstchurch which might or might not be classified as just on the edge of the New Forest.

The best (and possibly only) source on potential airfields I have found in TNA is AIR5/1377. Air/Cdre Darley's papers on aerodrome dimensions and design. A lot of it covers the expansion of sites from grass circles to three runways but it includes lists of place names worthy of initial investigation, but no additional detail such as grid references. Annoying when it mentions eg "Farnsfield N and Farnsfield S"
Maybe someone out there has copied all of it? I was only concerned with Nottinghamshire.
