Cambridgeshire Aviation Museums' Forum

Lincolnshire has led the way in forming an association of airfield sites, to help protect the sites and to increase understanding of this vital part of our history, and we would now like to explore whether such an association would reap similar benefits in Cambridgeshire.

There are at least 25 World War II RAF sites in the County, with a strong history, also several with WWI and Cold War connections - some are still in use including the Imperial War Museum at Duxford,
Gransden Lodge, RAF Wittering and RAF Wyton.

If you would like to help decide the way forward for Cambridgeshire Airfields, you are invited to a meeting at IWM Duxford during the day on Monday 10 March 2014. Pre-booking is essential, there is no charge. There will be an opportunity to look round the museum after lunch.

Gordon Chancellor, That's a name from the past, I used to skip college to go on field trips with him, Martin Howe and Alan Dawn to dig up fossils.

It's certainly an interesting forum and it's good to see the website launched now. Anything that promotes the subject is good with me

It is indeed a great site. It's good to have Cambridgeshire catch up with what Lincolnshire has done.

Despite the name it's not a trail where you go from one site to another. For example, IWM Duxford really needs a whole day.

The authors chose sites where access is possible - some of the former RAF airfields in the county are on private land. Others such as Bassingbourn are currently closed, by the MoD, and so are not featured at all.

Occasionally airfields or former RAFstations that are nearby, eg Marshall's Cambridge (no public access at all), is mentioned on the Cambridge City Cemetery webpage.
