I had a query from someone in HES, I wonder if anyone here has any information or suggestions where to look?

Hi Martin

I am looking for information on the use and operations of a tracked tank firing range. We have asked the tank regiment with no luck and are looking for some kind of info on how they worked.
Could you fire it out to the various groups you are in and see what comes back.
Cheers

Does he mean tank ranges where moving targets run on rails or tracks?

Had a reply

Hi Martin,

We are looking at a railway system on a large triangular layout. Very well engineered!

I thought the tanks travelled around the triangle and fired at static targets using turret manipulation. Not sure how they practiced deflection shooting if at all.

A number of Anti-tank Ranges had moving targets on narrow-gauge but I think the OP query concerns actual Tank firing ranges but what era.....?

It seems the OP has studied the tramway system at the former Stobs Camp (4m south of Hawick) and is looking or a comparison to explain the workings,

Stobs Camp is an old military camp dating back to 1902 and throughout its life housed a military hospital and POW camps.

Yes, it had military training ranges but I was not aware that it had a tank range.
