English Electric Lightning

Ha ha! It seems surreal that folks would pay to watch reheat engine runs on Lightning when I look back on night shifts with overnight engine changes and onto the reheat pan at one or two o'clock in the morning doing slam checks to wake up the locals. It's the smell of burning AVPIN which brings back the memories.....

Having last seen a flying lightning many, many years ago, these reheat runs are still pretty spectacular and I'd rather have that than a cold lump of dead metal in the corner of the hanger.

Under restoration at Bentwaters BCWM HAS

As a young boy in the 60s i saw this magnificent piece of British engineering fly past at one of the Baginton Airshows (possibly when the Kings cup was still held there). The sonic boom was absolutely terrifying for a young lad like I was.Despite being confused as to how come it had the same name as my family's fridgeI was inspired to buy the Airfix model !!

Must just say a big well done to the Lightning boys last Saturday for putting on another great event at Bruntingthorpe for the Double Twilight QRA Scramble. Looks like even after all these years those two resident Lightnings would still be able to scramble just as well as they always did.

Excuse the quality of some of these photos. Not the greatest I must admit. I think my camera is scared of the dark..or of Lightnings -
