Yes they did.
The B-17 has a number of essential controls that can only be practically operated by someone in the right seat.

Swamp Ghost is under restoration at the Pacific Aviation Museum, Hawaii. I don't think she will fly again. Here is a photo I took of her in May 2015

A B17 crashed yesterday at Hartford Connecticut, 7 people killed unfortunately.

I watched "the way to the stars" the other day. I noticed that on one of the scenes of a B17 getting airborne that the film has been reversed, ie the writing on the side was backwards.
