There are some to be wary of with star markings (no bar) as Allied aircraft for "Torch" landings all wore them, including RAF units. I have seen a couple thus marked so can't confirm whether it was widespread in it's use. Presumably they were easily washed or weathered off.

Regards the above mentioned books by Roger Freeman, the Mighty Eighth War Manual also has photographs of British aircraft used by the USAAF. The Mosquito being one of them shown at Watton.

Indeed, the 8AF had two Defiant TT MkIIs, DR944 and DR945, assigned to 1CCRC at Bovingdon from late summer 1942, mainly used for their intended target towing at Snettisham.
Both were returned to the RAF during 1944. :)

I finally got round to taking some pics of the British a/c with USAAF markings at the USAF Museum. I volunteer in the 8th AF Control Tower which is a separate building to the main hangars and galleries. Guess I should get into those other galleries some more!
