We normally see a Chinook fly over at least once a week but this week we had an extra treat. On Monday(27/3/2017) my wife came running down stairs shouting there's a Chinnok coming straight at us. I could hear that unmistakable sound and it was very loud. Apparently she was looking out our bedroom windw and it was coming straight at her. It flew extremely low over the house making everything shake. I had just enough time to catch it going over a neighbour's roof.

I assume that Chinooks fly VFR as there was a very low cloud base following an early mist. What made it more alarming for the wife was the nose down attitude.

This morning (30/3/2017) two more flew over but at normal height. However this evening we had two Apache's and what I think was a Super Puma. Must have been some exercises somewhere?

Just after I posted another two Apaches flew over. Will probably get more Chinooks tonight!

The evening got noisy again as another Chinook flew over, heading west at 23:19. This was followed by 2 Apache at 23:32, " Apache at 23:49 and a single Apache at 00:17 - all heading west. Probably more to come but I'm off to bed!

In the last 5 minutes we have had 3 Chinooks, 5 Apaches and 1 Super Puma. I assume returning from the other evenings trip.

Peter,
Probably heading to northern Scotland for Joint !Warrior major exercise. NATO countries involved so probably those aircraft came from France etc. Usually have lots of low fliers over SW Scotland when the exercise has taken place with West Freugh and Luce Bay in tne past. West Freugh could be comprised now as power generating kites up to 300 ft now based there on trials.

About a year ago I was at home watching a documentary about the first gulf war and there was a secne showing Chinooks. Blimey I thought the sounds good on my telly those Chinooks sound lif like. They then went to an advert break , but I could still hear Chinooks. Then I looked outside and saw 2 Chinooks flying north!

I take it people have seen shots on the telly of the Chinook at Whaley Bridge dropping bags of aggregate to stop the dam flooding. It looks like Chinooks have stopped having fleet numbers painted on them, or are they just very well camouflaged?

The ones we see every week look to be one colour with no discernible markings, so I assume very toned down.

The MOD have released some good pictures and video which are on various websites.

I tried zooming into some of the pictures but could not read any identification though could be something on the side. Might be a "L" underneath. It is difficult to enough to see the RAF roundel.
