Supermarine Spitfire

According to the 10 o'clock news today on radio two, 36 Spitfires have been found at an old airfield in Burma. That's the first mention I've heard of it being transmitted.

On lunchtime TV news it stated that they would start to look for them in January.

The farmer who discovered them revealed the plan at a public announcement at the Imperial War Museum this morning, I'm guessing this is the source of the Telegraph report.

That's funny...I thought they'd already 'underpinned an active runway'. Be nice to get some truth at last on this one.

If anyone fancies some archaeology, there's reputed to be a number of merlin and griffon engines amongst other artififacts, buried in a pit on former RAF Llandow's airfield. Condition unknown, likley poor.

With all this hype over Burma i think now is a good time to uncover more lost aviation treasures closer to home.
The Pembroke Dock Sunderland T9044 at the bottom of the Milford Haven is number one on my list.

Maybe I'm missing something here, but after WW2, with TONNES and TONNES of potential scrap metal lying around, wouldn't have been more cost effective simply to flog the lot to the scrappies - ? Surely it would have been cheaper that getting umpteen gangs of labourers / erks to dig umpteen of these fabled holes all over the country and bury the metal etc..:confused:

People always say "but there was so much unwanted metal lying around that it was worth nothing".

But yes I always think the same as you - just leave it I a big pile until the price goes up. Take time, trouble, effort and expense of burying it? Not me!
