Most of the ALG histories say they were built in 1943 used a little, probably for testing, and then close for extra work. The extra work was normally taxiways, hardstands and hangar provision. If this is so would they have looke more like Bolt Head, i.e. without taxiways? I know that some were not fully developed and did not get the full taxiways e.g. Newchurch & Winkton and at least one only had one efective runway. Are there plans or photos of this earlier stage?

The parallel taxiways were for refuelers and were only road width ie not for aircraft, the RAFM has plans of most of them.
You can tell a builder from an archaeologist by the size of his trowel. Mine is a small one!
