There was a request in my local paper from a chap who now lives in Suffolk, for the location of war time searchlight posts in Hertfordhire/Essex countryside. I am not sure if these would be located on farms/waste land or in the towns themselves, so i'm in the dark with this one
He is not specific what areas but I would assume it is East Herts and West Essex areas.
As this chap lives in Suffolk I thought I would try and help. Does anyone know if there are books available or would one have to visit County Hall or the records offices to find this out? If its fairly local and would not take too much time finding - I don't mind trying to help.
Brian, you could try the Royal Engineers or Royal Artillery. Given that Anti-Aircraft Batteries were (usually) operated by the RA, it might be worth contacting them via their web site HERE

Searchlights were originally operated by the RE but because of their close association with the AA batteries, the searchlight units were re-badged, in 1941, as Royal Artillery units. They passed back to the Royal engineers in 1961 (I think! Please tell us otherwise if that's very wrong!).
Might be worth trying to look for any Home Guard involvement too.
