In this editlon, we have included details of First World War airfields for the first time,
fulfilling the intention noted in the introduction to the Elghth Edition. The listing is
not intended to be exhaustive at this stage. lt includes all major bases used by the Royal
Air Force following its formation on April 1st, 1918, but specifically excludes airfields
in the following categories:-
(a) Former RFC and RNAS airfields which had fallen into disuse prior to April lst, 1918.
(b) ‘Landing grounds' used on a temporary or emergency basis by the RFC, RNAS or RAF.
Such landing grounds were quite numerous but generally speaking dld not have any
permanently based aircraft (although in some cases hangars, barrack huts etc. were
provided). Surviving records indicate many of these sites by name but give no precise
details of their location or use.
(c) Aircraft manufacturers' airfields are mostly excluded since most of these were operated
by the individual contractors and not by the RAF or its predecessors. (ln some cases aircraft
construction did take place on the same sites as RAF airfields, and a number of these cases
are noted.) The exception is that airship constructors’ works are included since airship sheds
involved a major capital investment which was generally borne by the Admiralty or other
government departments.
There follows a list of bases, given in alphabetical order. Where the site was used agaln
(usually during World War Two) the reference number relating lt to an entry elsewhere in the
book is included. ln other cases the location is related to the nearest town where possible.
It is intended to include the site soley used in World War One in the map supplement in due
course, but it has not been possible in this edition.

Aldeburgh 2 miles NW of Aldeburgh, Suffolk. Not mentioned in RAF organisation for 01.04.1918.
Later in 1918 it was a Marine Observers School (BE.2, DH.4/9, DH.6).

I grew up in Blackboys and never knew about this airfield until last year, I can't find any info out about it anywhere. The strange thing is that I have had a few flights in a little Pegasus Q (G-MVRX) Microlight from the same fields as the WWI airfield, this was in the early 1990's. I am also trying to track down a photograph of the microlight as well.

Blackboys, East Sussex near Uckfield but I don't have a precise location. It was a landing ground (for emergency landings), rather than a full-blown airfield, used by 78 (Home Defence) Sqn when they had a flight at Telscombe Cliffs between Nov 16 and Sep 17. Beyond that I know nothing.

Brading .IOW::From June 1918 until the end of May 1919 the Royal Flying Corps used an airfield on requisitioned land at Brading Haven.The field was located to the west of Home Farm and south of the Bembridge to St Helens railway track. The aircraft were a detachment from 253 Squadron(possibly 511Flt) at Bembridge Point.Also used by DH.6 aircraft from Forelands (512 and 513 Flts)

Malahlde Castle N of Dublln. Alrshlp sub-station for rnaln station In Anglesey.

Oranmore No known use prior to July 1919 when No. 105 Squardron (Bristol F.2b) moved here

Queenstown (Aghada], 5 side of Cork Harbour. For a short period in 1918 this was the base for

Brading .IOW::From June 1918 until the end of May 1919 the Royal Flying Corps used an airfield on requisitioned land at Brading Haven.The field was located to the west of Home Farm and south of the Bembridge to St Helens railway track. The aircraft were a detachment from 253 Squadron(possibly 511Flt) at Bembridge Point.Also used by DH.6 aircraft from Forelands (512 and 513 Flts)

And there are bound to be others. The list was compiled from informaion available in 1981. Since then, as you know data has become easier to find.
When I scanned the booklet it automatically went into "Paintshop Pro" (dont know how to change that) and the copy problems that brings. For instance I cannot add new data to the list as it's presently set up. Can anyone change that to make it more accessible to alteration.

That was my thought too, but I was hopeing there was a simpler way.

Regarding OCR, I've been using this a lot and it's free and works fine under XP:

I've had a lot of success with it but the trick is to scan you documents at a fairly high resolution (say 300dpi+) and make sure the lines are as near as possible horizontal.
