Gun pit (Brick Lined) was created by Denis
Often found reference to on airfield plans, these Gun Pits can be difficult to find in the undergrowth. I knew this one exists at Hunsdon, just took me some time to find it again. It was not until I cleared the moss away from the brickwork that it showed up clear enough to photograph.

I found another previously unknown (to me!) gunpit at Hunsdon today.
This differs from others as it is above ground, and rendered on the outside.
After all the years of walking this airfield, it still throws up the odd surprise!

Hi,
Would you be able to tell me the measurements of the brick built gunpits? I may have identified some of these on the RAF vertical photographs at RAF Aston Down. They appear as 'doughnuts' and are dispersed around perimeter and in geneal measure between 3-4m.

You can tell a builder from an archaeologist by the size of his trowel. Mine is a small one!

doughnuts are generally sandbagged LAA postions, these features can be found at ground level or on top of pillboxes. Today they can survive as earthworks but are difficuilt to get exact measurement but are about 6ft in internal diameter.
Brick lined circular form gunposts are also about 6ft in diameter.
Square shaped ones are 6ft 6in internal (as measured at Burtonwood).

I guess this one could be sandbagged, its really hard to tell as its soo small. I have attached an image, best quality i'm afraid, with the 'doughnut' in the centre of the image.
(NB also another new likely Type 22 pillbox in the hedge just to the north of the circular feature. - can't tell if its been removed or not from the later photographs.)
