Silkolene Lubricants container

I 'liberated' this container from the bungalow guardroom of RAF Seaton Snook in the mid to late 1970's , this and a large board mounted airfield plan which hangs in my garage ! I'm keeping the airfield plan but will gladly donate this to the ARG Archive when I next visit .

After your comment about not Googling the name , well I did and that's a very unfortunate company name they have now ! I also sent the photos to a friend of mine who raced cars and motorcycles around both Croft and Thornaby aerodrome circuits in the late 50's and he also commented on Silkolene oils being very popular amongst those who ran performance racing engines .

The airfield plan I have is of the Seaton Snook ROTOR station and it has been painted onto a piece of light hardboard or similar and measures about five by four feet . It shows the Ops Block , VHF Receiver and Transmitter , the Technical Site at Graythorp as well as the nearby Greatham Aerodrome . The plan extends into Seaton Carew itself and shows the main local roads with many of the buildings being shown in relief as small wooden blocks . I have some photos of it and will post them up . I actually found it blocking a gap in the perimeter fence during one of my visits were I was fortunate enough , stupid enough , to go into the tunnel system via the bungalow before it became completely flooded .

I also remember the wartime GCI 'Happidrome' building alongside Brenda Road , also long gone , which was still then very much intact with the reporting hall and the controllers balcony very impressive and similar to the ones you see at Digby and Uxbridge . In old abandoned allotments quite often enamelled advertising signs were used to supplement fencing/hedges i have recovered a few from a nearby abandoned allotment .

Hi David, I have read your post with a lot of interest. i have spent the last 2 years amassing quite a lot of information on the ROTOR radar system that RAF Seaton Snook was a part of. I have managed to get hold of aerial photograph of the site dating back to the 1970s which clearly shows the technical site including the Guardhouse, R3 Operations Block, World War 2 Happidrome and the Type 80 modulator building. I would be very interested to see the photos of the site plan you have especially in relation to the location of the UHF/VHF transmitter and receiver sites. These would have been located some 2.5 miles away from the technical site to stop the main radars from interfering with the transmission and receiving of radio comms from aircraft under Seaton Snooks control.

Any information you can give me would be greatly appreciated.
