My girlfriend and I got permission from the estate manager to explore the old camp at Stowell Park. Amazing day even though we had time to cover the southern half of the site.
We found one remaining "Nissen" hut which still partly had it's interior wall lining and fixtures and lots of period detritus. Pretty much every building base was there and we were able to identify every building from the 1950s photos.
Highlight of the day? My girfriend found a 1943 dated US GI dogtag lying in the dirt next to one of the old ward buildings and we were able to clean it up. A quick bit of research shows that the GI in question was still around in 1995 in California and we're trying to get in touch with him via the American Legion.
If it helps at all the 128th General Hospital was based just outside of the town of Warminster on the very western edge of Salisbury Plain, which was the area where many US army units were based prior to D-Day. Ranger
There was a US hospital in the park at Longleat House near Warminster but I cannot find any information on it - can anyone help?
