To mark the 75th anniversary of Boxted Airfield, near Colchester, events will be held this May & June to commemorate the arrival of the first Americans at the airfield and arrival of the first Marauders of 386th BG. One of the events in June will see the launch of a display of photos of the airfield buildings in the war comparing them with the surviving buildings. This display will be portable and designed to last beyond this event so it will not be confined to the museum but can be taken to different venues. The HLF grant will also finance development packs for schools and interested groups.
Understandably good quality photos from the period are not easy to locate and both myself and colleagues are looking through what we have of 386BG,56 FG,354FG. What we are looking for are photos that include details of buildings either internally or externally. Obviously we would be only too pleased to acknowledge the source. In particular, there is a blister hangar on the far side of the airfield which in the war contained a gunnery practice rig for Marauders. We are looking for photos of such a rig that we could use alongside our photo of the building today? In this instance it would not matter where it was taken. Additionally,if you know of anyone who might have photos that we could could use,it would be good to have their contact details.
