Hangar v Hanger

Hi

Came across the below pic yesterday while looking for some pictures of a Bessonneau Hangar, On the canvas is the company name which is written Bessonneau HangErs with an E not an A

I wonder why it was written this way? It's the first time I've seen Hangar written Hanger on a Hangar, LOL

French spelling or permutation?

I thought that but in French the word hangar seems to be hangar. Maybe Hanger was used in the early years of aviation or it was just a misspelling that was to costly to rectify.

Did the Army not make the same mistake when painting their hangars at South Cerney a while back?
