Local names for airfields

As too Halfpenny green 1941 changed too Bobbington 1943 ish.

It was actually the other way around - originally RAF Bobbington it changed to RAF Halfpenny Green in Sep 1943 due to frequent confusion with Bovingdon (think 1940's telephones). Recently became Wolverhampton Business Airport, now Wolverhampton Airport (2010).

A bit like RAF Northolt. It's not even in Northolt, it's in Ruislip! Northolt is about 2-3 miles away.

Holwell Hyde - Panshanger, could be another example?

RAF Deenethorpe was/is almost always referred to as Benefield in the area.

I've the following on my master list - they haven't been verified. Some may be local names, others official changes. Feedback very welcome.

Croft has always fascinated me as the AM site plans refer to Neasham. It's memorial is in the adjacent village of Dalton - a fact which confused me when it was first erected as the local rag stated that 'an airfield memorial has been erected at Dalton'. I spent the entire afternoon 20 miles south of the item, driving round in circles.

Yes - my list is / was incorrect. It seems that both Grimsetter and Hatston were known as Kirkwall at some point, but the latter was only for a short period when it became Kirkwall Airport. Have amended the list.

RAF Stradishall was actually in the Parish of Hundon, Suffolk but as there was another airfield Hunsdon it was decided to rename the site Stradishall
