This is a Figure from the RAE report titled 'Towed Gliders'. Notice the Nylon rope (for the WACO Hadrian) and the Hemp rope for the Hotspur are the only two anything near 1" dia.
In films of the glider launches you can spot the occasional sailor. Their job on the airfield was the splicing of these tow ropes, the Navy being the only service that taught its people the required skill.

Brings back memories of Marham and 100 Sqn dropping the banner after a dry shoot, "cut cut cut now!"

The Fairford rope dropping area was South West of the airfield - somewhere.
