RAF Ferry Command, Gander, Newfoundland

Hello,

New to the forum and ARG. I'm presently researching the RAF Ferry Command unit at Gander, Newfoundland, 1940-46. Wondering if anyone can recommend publications that explain the internal workings of an RAF or RAF Ferry Command airfield. More specifically, the various departments like "traffic" and "operations," and the role of flying control officers. In 1943, an increase in US ferry ops saw the opening of USATC-RAF joint control centres, but details on Gander's centre have been elusive. A document on the subject at TNA included drawings and diagrams of the various affected airfields, but nothing on Gander. Appreciate any help or suggestions.

Not sure if I've posted this in the correct forum location. Perhaps a moderator can confirm.

Regards,

Darrell

Following on from kebecker's mention of www.canadiana.ca/, there is/was a spreadsheet posted online that gave the various file references for the unit record books and there might be one relevant to your research.

The record books have all been digitised and are available to view online free. However finding them is a challenge, hence the spreadsheet. If I find it I will post the link.

I don't recall anything on Gander but then I was looking for UK based squadron records. They do include the appendices which may be more useful for your purposes as they sometimes include procedures etc. However from bitter experience they can be fickle in the information they record and I have spent hours going through hundreds of pages with not information relevant to my research - then again a gem may pop up just before you decide to give up :)

Thank you both. I have already reviewed all the RCAF ORBs for Gander, and have copies of the USAAF base unit history and RAFFC Gander unit diary and appendices. Still very few references to the joint control centre.

Darrell

Have you tried the Gander North Atlantic Aviation Museum? northatlanticaviationmuseum.com

Newfoundlanders are some of the friendliest people you can meet so even if they cannot help you will likely make friends!

This page from Fold3.com looks like a potted history of joint services (USAAF & RAFFC) and may include something of use. The downside is you have to be subscriber to view it.

I think they do a 7 free trial but don't know what that entails

I've used Fold in the past. They still want your credit card for the free trial!
