I looks like some sort of approach or ground control radar, perhaps brought in for a busy period like an exercise? Hopefully our radar experts will be along soon to give a definite answer.

It's a PAR-3B Precision Approach Radar for talk down. It can be turned (it's on a turnable - but it did have wheels!) to face either end of the runway.

The consoles would have been in the Approach Control Room in the tower.

Later superseded by PAR-3C, in the early 60's - a much more sophisticated system - in what looked like a big chicken shed with a large chimney on it.

Thanks for your immediate rwply. Just another question on the following photo. What is the checkered tower on the left of the photo. I dont know if on top has got a flag or beacon.

Thanjs for replying back was just curious. Going back to par3b. In those times there was a permanemt BABS at the end of the runway. Does they work together the babs and the par or indipendent and were can i find draawings of it.

And its a 203 Sqn Nimrod and a 13 Sqn Canberra. Dont know about anyone else bu the Nimrod seems to be climbing quite steeply compared to normal.
