As part of my Project Emily research I have located 57 of the 60 UK Thor emplacements. However, RAF Tuddenham has defeated me!
I read a document that said the Thor sites were in the middle of the airfield but I have yet to find any images that overlay the old airfield plan with a modern satellite image.
The OS map reference shows an area where I can't spot any airfield runway patterns.......I imagine I can see lines but I'm just convincing myself!
I hope there is somebody out there that knows these details.......your help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
The 1945 layer in Google Earth shows the airfield. I believe that sand and gravel extraction have removed the Thor site. The 1970 1:2500 sheet shows what may be one of the pads.
Part of Launch Emplacement No.7 still survives at Tuddenham, the northernmost of the three at that station.
A detailed plan of the whole Thor site at Tuddenham, plus much more Project Emily research, is available to paid-up members in the Members' Section of this forum.
Tuddenham was one of those sites that never quite made it to maps as an airfield due to being converted to Thor at a time when most disused airfields were being shown. It further missed being revealed after closing of the Thor site by being dug up for quarrying prior to the next map update. However as has already been said there is a slight trace in the 1970s mapping via old-maps.co.uk, although this website doesn't seem to allow free browsing these days.
No Amount Of Evidence Will Ever Persuade An Idiot (probably not Mark Twain)
Would the airfield plan have been held back due to the Thor installation and perhaps still in the hands of the RAF/MOD or the AHB?
Historic England will no doubt have some aerial photos of the airfield, possibly with the complete Thor Installation. It is a matter of luck but I suspect all the Thor sites would have been photographed by the RAF . There also seems to have been a few surveys carried out in the early 1960s but whether this included Suffolk I don't know, however requesting coverage is free.
