Possibly a simulated smoke filled Jet at Birmingham Airport

Seeing as the sign says Training area near this strange looking contraption the general appearance suggests that it is for training emergency crew in navigatinfg a smoke filled passenger aircraft .all the photoe's are taken from the path accesible from Marston Green Station that follows the perimiter fence of Birmingham airport to the A45

Most large airfields have a fire service training area often containing either a derelict airliner (at Farnborough they used one of the original Comet 1 fuselages for many years) or a replica which is usually fuelled by butane gas.
The radar tower is nothing to do with this being the airport's 'normal' radar head.

Some burning rigs incorporate a smoke chamber where the crews can practice using breathing apparatus hence why they are sometimes quite big like the Birmingham one.

The centre has several synthetic frames which they use to simulate different types of fires and emergencies on a variety of both aircraft and industrial simulators . Like many similar training centres they not only provide training courses for airfield and airport fire crews from both the UK and overseas but also now cater for the off-shore and chemical industries and as such have specific non-aviation training rigs consisting of chemical plant structures and vessels , high pressure pumping equipment and smoke chambers , the latter being for rescue in confined smoke filled areas with many of the oil-rig and industrial scenarios coming about due to the Piper-Alpha disaster in 1988 and the subsequent Cullen Inquiry .

Another reason for the synthetic frames is of course the cost and availability of 'real' airframes to burn and of their short life if the school does burn their aircraft , which is why most do not . The Teesside school took delivery of a Jaguar on the day of my visit and this has been designated for rescue practice only given both it's price and number of live burns it could provide .


This is 'Firebird' and the largest synthetic frame at the centre simulating a large wide bodies airliner .
The large area available to the centre , it stands on the former MStG V-Bomber dispersal area , also allows for training of vehicle positioning .

"Civilian Fire fighters from the Norfolk Fire Brigade, United Kingdom, work to extinguish a fire on a mock F-15 aircraft, during an exercise held at the fire pit at Royal Air Force (RAF) Lakenheath, United Kingdom. The US Air Force (USAF) 48th Civil Engineering Squadron (CES) Fire Department invited members of the Norfolk and Suffolk county fire brigades to join in on their annual training"

As has been said most units have a fire simulator, at Leuchars it was at the eastern end of the airfield. At Cranwell however they used the Canberra at Barkston Heath, but only once a year if that.

As for Teesside, I worked with a bloke whos dad was a fireman at BNFL at Salwick near Preston and they trained at Teesside.

At Fairoaks, our firecrews often have joint exercises with Surrey Fire and Rescue Service using some old cars and a derelict Cherokee; our firefighters go to Moreton in Marsh for their courses.
At camp at Manston ( the old RAF firefighting school) with cadets, we attended exercises on their burning ground
