Strange earthworks at Elmdon airport

Unfortunately i find my photo'es of these earthworks are rather poor however i imagine they would show up well on google earth (i have not yet mastered how to use it !!!) they are centred on thearound Sp 164 858 in Sheldon park at the West end of Birmingham/Elmdon airport they are various diameters and are hollow circular earth mounds up to about 4 foot high with an open entrance They are close to modern airport lighting and not that far away from a golf course but would make strange golf bunkers.An article in "Birmingham Forum " on the web which i can not relocate suggests apochryphally that theywere defense for Castle Bromwich Spitfire works , at Elmdon . If so i wonder if these might have been gun /searchlight emplacements however they do seem rather small for that purpose.

The 1938 OS sheet shows a stream/brook in about this position. The 1950s sheet shows that the brook had been straightened and rerouted so maybe this is a former stream bed? Old Maps link: www.old-maps.co.uk/#/Map/416375/285479/12/100739

Good job I'm not directing an artillery barrage, the position is the other side of the railway if you move the purple square so its top right corner is where the stream emerges from the railway bridge over it you have the location one of the mounds is pretty much in the middle .

am i dyslexic ? i have only just noticed my strange spelling of strange in the title !

Looking at my 7th series OS inch to the mile map of Birmingham i find it has an earlier layout of the runways of Elmdon Airport and the area where the mounds exist was a golf course before the runway was extended !
