I know that the HS2 will cut in between the M1 motorway and what used to be the runway end of Hucknall, in Nottinghamshire. It set me thinking- how close will it get to other airfields? I thought I could quickly scan an OS map with a route overlay on it it, but that seems to be too simple for the powers that be. I lost the will to live by the time I got to the Chilterns. As far as I know, the only airfields to date that have had a railway built over them are Papplewick Moor (Notts) and Wildenrath (Germany) Will there be more to come I wonder?

Ballykelly main runway was built across a railway line.
Don't understand why they don't use the old trackbed of the GCR instead of using greenfields; OK some of it's been built over but a heck of a lot is still clear. eg from Aylesbury to Woodford Halse.
A lot of new lines have used old track beds but mainly in London. Having travelled on HS1 quite a bit I can vouch for the speed. 17 mins from Central London to Ebbsfleet compared to 50 mins from Central London (a closer station ) to Dartford (also a closer station) and despite the price it became very popular with the Kent Coast lot who were fed up with getting up a 04:00 in the morning.
I must admit I haven't followed the HS2 route and what has to be cleared in its path but I suspect airfields may suffer either directly or indirectly. I should point out that HS1 rode on the back of Eurostar for part of the way but at joint stations the two are separated. Makes you wonder if Eurostar ever thought about using HS2?
No Amount Of Evidence Will Ever Persuade An Idiot (probably not Mark Twain)
Terry it has been suggested using the GCR trackbed but according to civil engineers its not that easy. Personally I think Marples made a major blunder in the early sixties and something like this should have been considered, but the Conservatives followed by Labour had a mantra of motorways are best. But look how long it took to build motorway from London to Glasgow, 50 years!! Whereas railway from London to Glasgow took 10 years. And on the eastern side of the country we only have motorway as far as Newcastle.
I suppose that the governments view back then was that it's their responsibility if a citizen wanted to get from London to Glasgow if the train was chosen. A system that ate up money and cost the taxpayer. Should however, if the citizen chose to go by road, then it was his responsibility to buy a car and he paid the government for the privilege buying purchase tax on the vehicle and fuel duty on the petrol. All the government had to do was use the road tax money to improve roads.
Why wasn't the Great Central route tarmaced over, with a occasional roundabout on it at the major stations?
