... is under a mile long and is on Moreton-in-Marsh airfield. It's used to train the emergency services.

This Motorway is only half a mile long.

The M41 was the only section constructed of what was intended to be the western quarter of London's Ringway 1.

It, along with the A40(M) also shown on that map, ceased to be a Motorway in 2000 due to a legistlative foul-up...

Perhaps the M181, linking Scunthorpe to the M180 is a contender for shortest public motorway?

2miles, 3.2 km

At 805 metres long, I believe the M898 is currently the shortest and highest-numbered UK Motorway.

But can it be a "proper" motorway if it does not have hard sholders?

via wiki

The M898 motorway is a 1⁄2-mile (0.80 km) motorway in Renfrewshire, Scotland. It is a spur route from the M8 motorway towards the Erskine Bridge. It is the highest numbered motorway in the United Kingdom, and also the shortest. It lacks hard shoulders along its length.

That map is a A3 size 1986 edition. Getting a bit tatty now, and of course well out of date, but always kept in my cab as you can't trust Sat Nav's. Must admit I have never heard of the M898 ? Thankfully don't go that far northwards these days.

Yes, as Motorway status is a legal definition, not a technical standard.

Then to complicate matters, there are "Special Roads" like the A55 at Colwyn Bay.

(I have never understood the legalese of them!)

I wonder why the M898 wasn't considered as an M8 spur? The M25 has loads of M25 spurs but I wonder if they are counted in the overall length of the M25?

Often wondered, we have roads and motorways but no highways, yet we have a highways agency.
