The M96, Britain's Shortest Motorway ?

There is another 70 MPH single carraigeway in Lancashire, its the Walton Summit spur off the M65.

And here are my 3 major bugbears with motorways.

HGVs overtaking each other, especially on uphill stretches of motorway. Theres a very deceptive slope on the M6 southbound near Charnock Richard services and you see trucks trying to overtake and in the end having to give up.

CLODS or Centre Lane Owner Drivers, the middle lane and outside lane are for overtaking only!

And finally the use of the term "fast lane", last time I checked the speed limit is the same for each lane. If you think I being pedantic, well a girl I worked with did a speed awareness course and one bloke on it was sure that there were different speed limits for each lane!

I wonder what make of car that bloke drove - I can hazard a guess :)

The old HGV excuse was the manual shifting up and down gears but many are now automatic and despite having 24 gears it doesn't matter. My did a driver experience in an HGV and apart from the huge trailer behind they were easy to drive, even reversing into a bay. The biggest problem with that size of vehicle was the lack of awareness of speed. 40mph felt like 20mph. That lorry had a speed limiter as well.

Some roads, although not motorways, do have crawler lanes but as with most things like this they are not thought through as the crawlers then have to merge with the other traffic - if they can! Many choose to ignore them due to this issue plus foreign drivers may not be aware of their purpose.

The last time I drove on the M25 I got stuck behind a bloke driving a Metro and he was doing 40, luckily for him in the inside lane. And he was wearing a hat! Luckily I only had 2 junctions to go before I left the motorway.

And of course there is a major problem with foreign drivers. Ive noticed this driving around the M56, you can tell someones foreign and not used to driving on the left by the way that they sit in the right hand lane.

I used to travel to Pitreavie four times a week and we used the A823(M), this also a very short motorway.

And someone refered to the term highway not being used in this country. Anyone remember the TV programme "thats life"? Esther Rantzen was arrested tor "obstructing the highway" when she was doing some consumer research.
