There is a Tweet advertising an indoor tennis court with the roof using a Belfast Truss

An advertisement has been posted recently for an 'old indoor tennis club', which is "free to a good home, just has to be taken down safely by the person who would like it". Now look at the lovely Belfast Truss roof! It's located in Wilmslow, Cheshire. Any bidders?

I’ve heard tales of that building being once an indoor WW2 parachute training centre.

Any truth in that?

Doesn't resemble a typical AM Parachute Store, but sounds like something to investigate further. Belfast Truss roofs have had some uses aside from aviation, even in the railway industry.

Indoor parachute training? Sounds improbable.

Tower and mock aircraft training are an integral part of learning to jump from an aircraft - they were in WW2 and remain so, today.

Check out 4 mins and later on this video:

Lots of parachute training is done on the ground and indoors. In the Para training videos I was shown in the early 90s (I was NOT a para and never tried any of it personally!) the training towers were inside a large inter-war type hangar. No, I can't remember which type it was. ;)

Cheers,

Ian P.

True, there is a dummy landing craft near here which was used for practising disembarking from them - an ex-police friend told me they practised getting out of their vans!

That website is unresponsive.

Ringway (Manchester Airport) 3 miles NW of Wilmslow parented a busy parachute training school during WW2 and local preparatory training facilities would have been helpful so it's quite likely the claim for this building is true. But where is it?

Thanks. Got it then realised that it is the same building discussed in another very recent thread! Need to link them methinks.
