Don't see much on Thorney - maybe as Army is still based there..!
Did a short tour at Thorney while in-between training, transit from Digby to St Athan. early Nov-1970 to late Feb-1971, at least could visit my folk at Hayling Island.
An uncle of mind was on Herc's as a Loadmaster.
Sailed there many times from Langstone and Sandy Point in a Firefly, sometime single handed, landing on west beach, many parties had there during the mid/ late 60's.
Maybe prompt some discussion around Thorney...!

Hi Skipp,
Please be advised that officially Thorney Island is in West Sussex, the RM postal address was Emsworth in Hampshire, travelling eastwards and once across the River Ems Bridge you are in Sussex, you will find alot of interesting threads on Thorney in the ARG Sussex airfields content.

As mentioned, Thorney Island is in Sussex, as defined in the Gazeteer of British Place names which locates each place in accordance with the counties that were in use in the early 20th Century when most of the places we are now interested in were first created or built
