Fighter Command Place Code Names during Battle of Britain.

I have been asked a question regarding code names for towns and cities in South East England being used by Fighter Command, an example being given is Queens Red = Deal.

I have looked in the publications on the battle that I own as well as searching the net and can find no mention of these code names. Did they exist and if they did, does anybody know where a list could be found?

Any help would be appreciated.

Not heard of this before but it seems logical and in keeping with RAF protocol of the time. I know the plotting maps of the period were divided into lettered squares, Deal is in 'R' - wonder if that's related somehow? Any other examples?

Sorry for taking so long to reply I've been busy of late.

The only other examples I have are that Biggin Hill was Sapper and Dover may have been referred to as Rock.

I does seem to be a bit of a mystery as I have found very little information at all.

Does anyone know the WWII call sign for Manston?

The only related info I've been able to find on the net comes from the BoB2 flightsim forum.
This chap has listed what the sim uses - no idea whether it is accurate or not, the original makers Rowan do seem to have done their homework most of the time.

Duxford, Kirton,Filton & Wittering all having the 'Sundial' callsign???
Somehow I cant quite see the same callsign being in use for all. But North Weald and Biggin Hill seem to be correct.

From 'RAF Biggin Hill' by Graham Wallace Biggin Hill was 'Sapper'

Have also this info from a fellow enthusiast;

Pershore - 'Firkin'

East Kirkby - 'Silksheen'

USAAF Winkton - 'Drainsink'

Stornoway - 'Pigsty'

Metheringham - 'Coffee Stall'

Duxford - 'Steersman'

Skellingthorpe - 'Black Swan' (the local pub was re-named.)

Thorney Island - 'Whitewell'.

Thanks for the additional info, the examples I have given were passed to me when I was originally asked the question.

The ones listed above all refer to military establishment and not towns or cities, I'm sure some form of coding would have been used to direct fighters (or were they just given a vector?), otherwise the Luftwaffe would have known they were about to be attacked, assuming they listened to the RAF frequencies. I find it odd that there appears to me no information in the public domain.
