Liverpool

I had to visit Liverpool at the weekend for my son's wedding. Coming from the south, M5, M6 & then M62 we passed several airfields. One I saw on the M5 going north on the right had a Mainhill. I cannot find it on Goggle, any ideas. Burtonwood was another, but I could not see any large hangars (Lamella type) on the north side but I did see a perimeter track way & some dispersals. On the way home I saw a perimeter track of the Vauxhall plant at Ellesmere Port. That was the extent of all I could manage such a pity.

PS BBC radio 4 is talking about Mildenhall it started at 3pm.

There is a major airway which runs across Birkenhead and Wallasey and is used by John Lennon airport.

Was Moreton Valence the airfield that you passed going north on the M5? Defford seems a bit far away to be seen from the motorway.

It could have been Defford, an airfield I have forgotten about. I think Defford & Stoke Orchard would make a good visit. But it was a Mainshill hangar I saw????

Richard, the airfield at Defford is mainly off limits to us civvies, some of it I believe is used by the police and there is some radar type things there too, Something to do with QINETIQ at Pershore I think. The National Trust own the former SSQ and it is now a nice visitor centre - Norwichpaul did some work there a few years ago!

Stoke Orchard is well worth looking at, I wanted to spend more time there than I did, well worth visiting though.

Very nice photo, Richard, even if a Mosquito would have been more appropriate! The aircraft is a Piper Navajo, almost certainly one of the ones that carry patients from the Isle of Man to Liverpool and back for specialised hospital treatment not available on the island. They normally route below 1500ft via the Mersey, if the weather is good enough for visual flight. Sadly, At B'wood the Lamellas and the J or K Type (forget which it was) were demolished earlier this year.

Thank you for that Dave, I took three photos from the Albert Dock and the others were not good at all, just this one was perfect. As for Burtonwood, I had not checked up on my route & spotted the remains on the north side. Yes pitty its all gone.

RAF Penkridge, may have been the one I saw. No Mains hangars that I can see but situated in the right area when driving north on the M5/M6. Seems as though it is famous for UFO's?

Interestingly Willis & Hollis quote one each Double Blister, and Extra-over Blister only for this site. Yet it's Robins which can be seen from the M6. Dave Smith mentions 2 Supers and 3 Standards in AS Vol.3.

You have to remember that I wrote AS3 nearly 30 years ago, long before any deep research into the subject of airfield buildings. I took the presence of five Robins at Penkridge at face value, but, a few years later, I discovered that it had originally had blisters and that the Robins were probably moved postwar from nearby Teddesley Park SLG.
