Birmingham (London) Airport??? was created by Peter Kirk
Just caught a bit of news tonight and it had to be airfield related!
Apparently by 2025 Birmingham can be reached from London by train in 40mins so they are looking at grabbing some of the London business.

Great, more high speed trains delivering you to low speed airports.

Will they name it London (Birmingham) at that point?

Well if Lydd is in London why not.

In the late sixties - the quest for London's Third Airport - most of the 48 investigated sites were inside the 65 mile recommended limit.

Those outside included Fairford, Boscombe and Hurn. Manston and Brize were right on the limit, Lydd is on the 60 mile circle.

The outcome of the £1.2M Roskill Commission was that Cublington (Wing) should be used. Another waste of public money.

I remember John Dankworth, the jazz player (wife Cleo Laine) objecting to Wing being nominated since he lived close by.

I remember my first visit to the old RAF Wing c.1970. I explored the old airfield, then set off in my car, through the village, and headed northward. Some five minutes later I came across a large hoarding in a field which proclaimed, 'If the Airport goes ahead, this will be the end of the main runway'. (or similar). It suddenly brought the scale of the problem down to earth; I was miles from the old RAF site. Thank heaven common sense prevailed.

When Ryanair first started one of their destinations was Frankfurt or to be precise Hahn (a former USAF base) only 90 miles away! They also fly to Nederrhein (aka Laarbruch) and advertise it as Dusseldorf, and how far away exactly is that?
