Researching Names

I really enjoy exploring old airfields.

What is particularly pleasing is when I can find some sineage or perhaps a name that has been left somewhere many years ago by personnel.

If you are fortunate enough to find a name I suggest that it is well worth trying to research the individual.

I was in such a position regarding an American Soldier who was a member of the 654th Tank Destroyer Battalion.

Around 1943 he carved his name in a tree in County Armagh which I photographed a few weeks ago.

After a bit of work I received an E-Mail from his daughter yesterday which was VERY pleasing.

Its great to make such a contact so keep this in mind the next time you are having difficulty trying to get through somebrambles to gain access to a building!

I ought to try it on this Chap, Flt/Lt Berg from either 295 or 570 Squadrons, both part of 38 Group, who took Rivenhall over from the USAAF 397th Bomb Group.

I found one at Nuthampstead; anyone know Kilroy......

look at the chalk drawing, on the reverse of this door was a full length chalk drawing of an airman. Cant find the photo for that image though

You should have a good chance of finding Berg.

George will perhaps take a little more effort but working through the Units based at the airfield may shine some light.

A good tip is to find the ORB for the airfield and look at the movement orders if they are kept in it. It'll list a fair number of ground personnel by name, rank trade and service number.
