Hi Ted thanks for that, i will passing through wellington station on friday on the way to Llanbedr, its a pity the line with all the stations used by the RAF/RNAS is no longer, another victim of Mr Beeching

Dont blame Beeching! He only did the report, the real blame lies with Ernest Marples who was transport minister who approved most if not all the closures. It just so happens that he was a non executive director of a civil engineering firm that got most of the contracts for the motorways!!!

And as for lines linking airfields, well how many airfields are within say 10 miles of the east coast main line? Quite a lot I would say.

How many RAF and indeed other military airfields had/have railay lines in to them or railway stations? Off the top of my head there is famously Ballykelly. Cosford has its own station, and Leuchars had a rail spur to bring fuel in to the station until approx 1989.

I know that some of the MUs had rail networks as well.

I've only come across this thread today so pl forgive this latish response.

Firstly, the railway at Ballykelly only crossed a part of the airfield & runway; it didn't actually serve the station. Passengers for BK went to Limavady Jct a couple of miles away. Not sure about goods.

Secondly, the railway at Leuchars was part of my small 'empire' when I was stationed there in the mid-eighties. We used to get compressed gases as well as aviation fuel by rail but BR priced themselves out of the former market before I left. The system was refurbished in the late eigthies and a more modern engine was brought in in my time. However, the new pipeline supply and BFIs sounded its death knell.

Finally, another RAF station with its own station & spur was Cranwell.

Isn't the station at Cranwell now used as the Guardroom?

The guardroom has always been the old railway station.

I believe there was a railway link to Langford Lodge when the base was being constructed.

Very late to this thread but most closures recommended by the Beeching Report were signed off by Labour as Marples and Co. were kicked out barley a year after the report was published.
Back on topic, RAF Cardington was adjacent to Cardington station on the Hitchin to Bedford line - the line that served RAF Henlow - but I'm not sure if the route of the railway was within the camp's boundary nor if there were any sidings serving the camp at any time.
