Calling today at the security door I was asked to wait while they contacted someone with information about this former Rest Home. A few minutes later a young lady came to meet me with four wartime photographs of this home. Showing her the book I had with me we found some comparison shots. She told me that she is quite interested in this kind of thing as along with her husband they go around photographing wartime pillboxes at the weekends !!! Nice coincidence Sadly there is no plaque here. The woman I spoke with is just in photograph No4 of the first view.
I've been trying to find the location of Pangebourne House for a while now, calling at Pangbourne Police Station last week they gave me a print-out with this location.. wrong place.. no real surprise Tried the local Library, they couldn't really help...but gave me the phone number of the local history people. They have never heard of Pangebourne House.... So where is it ? does it still exist ?? With thanks to Fred Preller's site that Brothmark has done a link too [ No 11 ] I know what to look for when I'm around that area. Does anyone have any information regards this particular site..?
Many thanks for that link Graham. Very interesting. I go over the toll bridge most mondays, used to be 20p now it's 40p !! A woman at the old folks home that the police directed me to said she thought old Pangebourne House was where we now know it to be. I even turned around in the open gateway of the drive to this elusive houise. I'll call there again next week and hopefully get some photographs. Thankyou once again.
I called at Pangebourne House today....wasn't allowed to take any photographs. '' We've had too many people around wanting to take photographs '' '' Sorry no, goodbye !! On my way home I decided to call at RAF Benson to re-photograph their Spitfire Gate Guard, the sun was in a favorable position but the person responsible for saying yes or no wasn't there. Not one of my better days....so I again called at old Bucklands House and took some more photographs in the sun this time.
