Hi. I'm looking for Luftwaffe aerial photos of the Merseyside area. Does anyone know where I can find them. i.e. websites. official archives or publications? Any help would be really appreciated.
There are a number of websites selling copies of Luftwaffe Aerial photos. As I can't vouch for quality I won't put any links up but some are very expensive and may not be of good quality due to the originals being printed on poor quality paper (wartime).
Merseyside is covered by Cities Revealed, which includes Luftwaffe coverage, on this website www.ukaerialphotos.com
and you can view watermarked zoomable photos if you select the 1940 tab. Not sure of the extent though. I suspect the source for this was the archives in the USA, probably for the use of the local council only, although if you are local you paid for it so you should have access to it

John,
I've got some somewhere, mostly of Liverpool itself from 1940 although I know their is good coverage of Merseyside area in USA - but difficult to access any of it without a visit over there unless you can link up with a US researcher who doesn't charge a fortune....
The comercial provider that was flagged here sells tiny bits of coverage for a high price. Let me know you still interested and let me know location
AP Man I was wondering if I would abe able to use this image (Post #10) in an educational resource I am setting up for my own business here in Peterborough? It would be mainly used with schools and family learning. Do you have information about copyrights and so forth?
Regards
AL
Perhaps you could explain to me through messaging a bit more about your project before I say yes - happy for private research but would like to know more if intended for a business (I had to buy these images and have not recouped the costs myself)
The NCAP website has started to include some Luftwaffe aerial photos, almost entirely Kent - so far. If I recall they are Summer 1940 and include Gravesend and Eastchurch and just miss Manston. They promise to add more but it seems to have gone quiet in recent months.
I wish they would put more effort into the older imagery. There is no shortage of modern and recent aerial coverage but there is little other access to wartime and postwar aerial photographs online.
I did ask them about that but can't recall the reply. I think the main focus has been on overseas locations. The more modern ones are useful if they date from 60s and 70s but later ones are too close to those on Google Earth and in some cases may even be the same. Oddly some USAAF photos appeared a couple of months ago but were never announced.
The Luftwaffe ones will probably be the most interesting as they have not been seen elsewhere, being basically inaccessible, to all but the rich, at NARA.
