My understanding is that if it kicked off with the Soviets and the Nato airbases wer destroyed or put out of action they would use the long strips of straight autobahn to land and conduct sorties. I was on a Harrier squadron in the early eighties, our field deployments were to obviously filed sites at Sennelager. One of them was a road strip however, called IIRC Eberhard.
Our war sites were on autobahns, but there location was top secret and only the force commander and squadron commanders knew their location.
and of course the large edge of town warehouse like supermarkets with huge unobstructed car parks ???, some of the autobahn designated strips could be identified by the removable "street furniture" etc etc. and of course it was a secondary task for the MOS kits
Ted, the MOS kit didnt rear its ugly head until after the wall came down. And I recall reading about a 20 km stretch of Autobahn in East Germany that was straight as a die, and was obviously intended for use as a runway. There was also a straight stretch near Osnabruck that was used for a Harrier deployment just before it opened in 85.
