10-SEP-07 Hardened Aircraft Shelters

A pair of Hardened Aircraft Shelters (HAS, buildings 4109 and 4110) built c.1983 by the US Air Force, two of 13 of the type which are only found at Alconbury. The HAS were specially designed to accommodate the large wingspan (31.39m) of the U2/TR1. The shelters are steel-framed with concrete panelling and clad in corrugated metal, painted in standard NATO dull brown. The shelters have a rectangular plan with a single-storey pedestrian entrance to the left-hand side. The convex roof has characteristic T-shaped roof ventilators. Rolling steel and concrete doors mounted on runners are supported with a framework of steel girders designed to transfer an equal amount of weight to each runner.

Ted will be pleased at how many buildings at Leuchars are listed.

I had a look last night afraid GEF will never get a new building stuck in 55 til the camp gates close !! presume 181 Ops is between guardroom and med centre only went in there once to lay an mergency power supply from there into the Med Centre; some contractor hit the main feed into the med centre; The facility management company wanted mega bucks to get in a generator we closed the road that ran to the decon annex and laid cables from half a dozen sockets in the old ops and had all the drug fridges, treatment room, lights & Pcs in the Drs offices and med admin up in about 45 minutes . That's what I miss Canberra being given a task that isn't really our job and getting a result with everyone happy at the end except the money grabbing contractors of course .

I had the great pleasure of working in building 181 on exercises at Leuchars before the COC was completed in 86. Boy was it awful, condensation running down the walls!
