Desperate Help

I am doing a school project with my daughter and am hoping someone can help, I am after a list of the RAF bases on British soil during World War 2, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Can I suggest Google? Also try www.controltowers.co.uk - I make airfields for my flight simulator & use that site a lot, as well as AiX I hasten to add! Oh - wikipedia is a very useful resource as well.

Hope it's just airfields you want Matthew, as there are probably double the number of non-flying sites .

I don't mean this in a funny way or anything, but shouldn't we be able to answer this here between us?!
If I was looking for airfield info this is the first place I would come, a quick Google search also brings you to this site, here we are recommending someone to go elsewhere to find an airfield answer!
It does strike me that although we know the nitty gritty on types of bricks used and the last use of of a type so and so building, that sometimes we loose sight of the basics.

Embarrassingly I can't answer the question either, but would love to know!

I agree with you in principal mawganmad but the OP was not specific and may actually require more than just a simple list of names and, as Carnaby pointed out, there are almost as many non-airfield sites as airfields proper. I have a readily available text list of WW2 Military airfields by name but not location although I have them all (?) plotted!

It sounds like you have the info that he's asking about, would be great to see it posted here somewhere.
Putting myself in the OPs position I would take the question to mean RAF airfields, that was all I was interested in when I was at school anyway (well and some other things!), and thinking about it I wasn't aware that the RAF even had non flying sites - infact this forum has opened my eyes a bit to this aspect.

I hope my point didn't come across as obtuse or anything as that is not what was intended, but do you know what I mean about the more basic and 'entry level' airfield info that some people wan't to know but without getting too involved in the subject. The other thing, which is all our faults, is the sheer amount of info on here now!

Interesting point about the sheer volume of information MM, its a case of where to start and if you are not exactly sure I think it could be a little daunting. Is there a need for a basic introduction to some of the expert areas in AIX that goes beyond the initial thread desciption?

I think that is one of those piece of string questions, I guess by adding more straight forward areas we are just adding to the complexity of the forum?

As long as someone like Matthew can come here as a first timer with a question and we can try and point him in the direction of a good thread or section here, or be able to answer directly then good work has been done!

Sounds about right - the figure I remember is that 444 airfields were constructed during WWII. Think it comes from AP3236.
