What exactly was BRC

Within the history of XI Eng( USArmy) of which 833 EAB was part it records that the battalion went to Christchurch(March/April 44) and lifted and relaid the BRC(British Reinforced Concrete Mesh) runway.

Just exactly what was BRC? - from the photos(see my Christchurch page-link below) it looks to be the mesh used for reinforced (but without the concrete) similar to Rod & Bar ... lighter gauge but heavier than the Sommerfeld Tracking stuff.

This was done ( the relaying) presumably because aircraft were encountering difficulties using the runway as originally laid.The runways had a tendency to form a bow wave in front of the aircrafts wheels if not properly secured.

The other question this raises - if they lifted and relaid - who laid it in the first place and exactly when?

Thanks Paul -I suspected that I was right in my guess but it is nice to have it confirmed.(BRC))...Regarding the 5004/5005ACS - is there any record of their activities? If so- where?

It would seem more likely to be the 5005ACS as a " recollection" on the Winkton site states that thev 5004 worked on "Woodchurch, Winkton, Coolham and Chailey in that order".

That has always been a problem - both airfields were within the Christchurch borough boundaries - in fact Hurn still is - a fact which rather gets up the nose of Bournemouth Council!
