I've only just noticed this link. I visited these tunnels in the early '70s, in fact, some of my staff welded patches on a 16" which ran below the access tunnel. It was impossible to drain and de-gas the pipe, so the patches were welded with oil being pumped to disperse the heat of the welding.

The pump chanber was an impressive size with the largest pumps I have ever seen; there were many butifully maintained brass valves and fittings.

One could climb a vertical ladder on the dam at the end of each storage tank and look along the surface of the oil.

A most impressive visit. I do not know the current state of the site.
