The January 2011 edition of the magazine carried an article by Dave Smith on the subject which originally appeared in his book 'Britain's Military Airfields 1939-45 , published by PSL in 1989 . Chapter 6 'The airfields that never were' lists five in Yorkshire ; Appleton Wiske near Northallerton , Huggate Wold near Driffield , Litfoss near Beverley , Sinderby near Thirsk and Strensall near York . The book list's 88 'airfields that never were' and is worth adding to your collection .
I knew someone from Bridlington who remembers seeing aircraft flying from a site near Flamborough / Bempton in the later stages of the war. I haven't seen her in 14 years and know not what happened to her. She thought they were American aircraft (not sure if she meant American built or operated).
Apathy and OUR silence is as powerful as any bulldozer and equally cherished by developers.
TNA files on Bomber Command expansion and Target Force 'E', c.1942 list the following proposed satellites for Yorkshire (and Durham) airfields
AIR20/2864
Middleton St George - Piercebridge
Leeming - West Tanfield
Linton - Easingwold
East Moor - Strensall
Wombleton - Ryton
AIR14/1113
Lindholme - Askern or Tickhill
Leeming - ?, but Yefforth area
Driffield - Huggate Wold
Another source declared that Strensall and Appleton Wisk near Croft were 'in the pipeline'.
I suspect all these proposals were shelved due to the massive expansion in East Anglia / Northants etc when the USAAF arrived.
Plan A is always more effective when the problem you are working on understands that Plan B will involve the use of dynamite
I wonder where "Tickhill" would have been sited. I can't envisage an area devoid of streams, unless it was Stainton way. Either way, it would have sandwiched Finningley nicely too.
I came across a list similar to Carnaby's can't recall which file, and noted that some of the proposed airfields became bombing ranges. Strensall became a range associated with East Moor.
No Amount Of Evidence Will Ever Persuade An Idiot (probably not Mark Twain)

I always took it that Tickhill was to be an addition to the airfields already in existence, including Bircotes and Worksop. (Bircotes was already in the planning stage by 1940) The reason I mentioned water, was that drainage is present around Stancil and as the Stancil area was used as a bombing decoy, it's position and suitability for expanding into an airfield must have crossed the military mind once the luftwaffe was heavily engaged in Russia and massed home attacks unlikely in future.
