Telephone exchanges

Anyone remember the military telephone system before it was direct dial?

If you were at say Marham and wanted Brize Norton you would ring your exchange on 0 and ask for Brize and the extension. You would first get put through to an exchange at Newmarket then Hillingdon then Hawthorn and finally Brize.

Now where were all the exchanges located? Some are self explanatory, Hillingdon was at Uxbridge, Hawthorn was Rudloe Manor. There was also an exchange at Stafford and Pitreavie. But where was the Newmarket exchange actually located? And what about the one at Rothwell Hague? I know its in Yorkshire, in fact its sign posted off the M62. But how exactly did it end up with an exchange?

Was Haydock an exchange? I know there was a Sigs Unit of some shape or form there as a colleague was posted there.

Didnt know about Haydock, these were the exchanges in service when I joined up.

Haydock was definitely an RAF exchange; I remember it from the late 60s at least.
