Aerial Lighthouses

Aerial Lighthouses was created by REF
Can anyone provide any information on these, particularly photos of any in use from the 1920s onwards.

Personally I am not sure what they are but I have been asked by a fellow ARG member who is trying to find photos of them, preferable British ones.

Thanks

Plan A is always more effective when the problem you are working on understands that Plan B will involve the use of dynamite

The first were proposed (and presumably erected) in 1908 for Zeppelins in Germany.

I hope it's OK to resurrect this thread, but I have come across references to these sites and these seem to suggest more permanent structures than the mobile equipment featured in this thread. This is backed up by images on the website mentioned by carnaby,  www.mycetes.co.uk/a/page16.html , which includes this image of Carnbrook Aerial Lighthouse, and there seem to be other such permanent towers as part of this network. Is there more detailed information published anywhere, or is a trip to The National Archives the only option? I would be interested to see a list of locations, if one exists. I always thought they were largely a south of England thing, but there was one of these Aerial Lighthouses at Cruden Bay in NE Scotland, so their coverage was greater than I had assumed.

They were marked on Civil Air maps pre-war as AIR LIGHTS, normally an eight point star and aerodromes with air lights the standard circle and disc symbol with the same eight pointed star overlaid. Marine lights were a five pointed star.

It's too late now , as I want to get to bed before Santa calls, but if I remember I will try to post some links to online versions of the maps that show them - assuming my bookmarks still work.

Peter,

Thanks, that would be great. The maps I have (Royal Air Force edition 1/4 inch to one mile) include eight-pointed stars in the key to indicate aerodrome beacons, airway beacons, air navigation beacons and track indicating beacons. However, no such beacon is marked for Cruden Bay, nor indeed can I see any marked on any of the Scottish maps, other than as combined symbols at aerodromes, eg Abbotsinch. If Cruden Bay had one of these aerial lighthouses, why is it not marked on these maps, and surely it wouldn't have operated in isolation, so where are the other ones?

A journalist used the term 'aerial lighthouse' for Lowther Hill in 1960.
