The historical listing of aviation sites in Ireland North and South www.avsitesireland.com
Northern Ireland landing grounds request was created by hugoj_air
Would anyone know where I can obtain a list of of military landing grounds in Northern Ireland used during WW1 and also WW2. If no
list is available, then any information related to those site's would
be most welcome.

At some point this year Ken Delve will have a book in his series "Military Airfields of Britain" for Scotland and Northern Ireland. As for now, the floor is open to the experts

Not many in Northern Ireland. Just the following:-
Limavady
Ballykelly
Eglington
Maydown
Mullaghmore
Toome
Cluntoe
St Angelo (Enniskillen)
Aldergrove (Belfast Airport)
Nutts Corner
Langford Lodge
Mahhaberry (Now a prison)
Long Kesh (was a prison)
Sydenham (Belfast City Airport)
Newtownards
Millisle (Never completed but has parts of runways)
Ballyhalbert
Kirkistown
Bishops Court
Murlough (was an SLG so invisible today)
Greencastle (Only finger hardstands remain - all concrete now used as walls).
This excludes seaplane bases. Sorry I haven't got map references. Try Google Maps to locate.
If you want to see what remains Getmapping.com now cover all Northern Ireland.
Also the Ordnance Survey for Northern Ireland (OSNI) website has good coverage going back to the 1960's for some of them. You will need to register but it is free and you can buy tiles online. During the "Troubles" active airfields were removed from maps and have only recently reappeared. So pre 1972 and recent will show them. Pre 1960's may also show them but not always.

Sorry forgot to add that I don't know anything about WW1 in Northern Ireland. Out of interest would you include Eire in WW1 as it was part of the UK then?

My word you have been busy. Sorry for putting you to all that bother making the list for me. I should have said that I have details for
all the main aviation locations, including all on your list above. But the sites I am interested in are the Landing Grounds (Airstrips) as were used by military liaison and training aircraft during WW2, I know they are very hard to locate.
In most cases they would use a field for a period and just move to
another site when the first field became unusable due to wet weather
or for some other reason. For instance scanning through the Air Britain
WW2 crash lists can bring up gems like this 06.01.1940 Magister I
N3982 24 EFTS Ballyclare, Co. Antrim CTO (crashed on take off).

Tried to edit my last message but it wouldn't let me. Anyway I made the same error as yourself Peter. I forgot to add that I have full details of all Marine (Sea Plane) bases and I'm familiar with osni mapping. During WW1
the whole of Ireland was as you say part of the UK and I need to pinpoint some of the lesser landing grounds used then.

Should have spotted the Landing Grounds clue. Nevermind hopefully someone would find it of use.
Back to Landing Grounds. I seem to remember an article, possibly two, on "Postage stamp fields" (Cub strips?), I think it was in Flypast. If anyone has a copy they might be able to confirm if any from Northern Ireland were included.
I don't know what the source for this sort of location is but my impression is it more word of mouth. There is a fine set of books on Welsh airfields and covers a large number are landing grounds that don't appear in any lists. The series is called "Airfields and Landing Grounds of Wales" by Ivor Jones. I have got two but have yet to read them (I looked at the pictures first!). There maybe some clues at to sources of information for obscure landing grounds that can be applied to Northern Ireland.
As regards the OSNI site, I wish the OS would do the same for their old maps - especially the ones that show airfields!

Umm "Postage stamp fields" I like that. Never heard that expression, but
it's very apt. Would you by any chance remember a date for the Flypast
magazine. Ya, osni have an excellent online mapping service and now with Get mapping giving full aerial photo coverage for NI, we have a reasonable method for "looking" for locations.

I think Ballywalter (3.5 miles from Ballyhalbert) was one of these landing strips. I will check some of my materials and get back to you on this.
