I realised I hadn't followed this up. There were in fact two operators on the operational version, one on azimuth and the other on elevation. The azimuth man operated the pear button.
I am now trying to find out if these were used operationally after 1942 which is the latest date I have recorded. I suspect it fell out of use as it wasn't much good at night whereas the camera obscura was okay. An expensive bit of kit if it had limited use!
