You can tell a builder from an archaeologist by the size of his trowel. Mine is a small one!
The Cold War was created by Paul Francis
Seeing the use of the wording 'The Cold War' on here and many other internet sites, it made me wonder what is or was the The Cold War? When did it start and when did it end? Everyone on the planet knows the beginning and end of the First and Second World Wars but what of the Cold War? Does anyone actually know? Why do we say its a Cold War airfield or building when we dont even know when it started or ended - has it ended? perhaps someone knowes - anyone?

If I recall my Chruchill correctly , he used the term Iron Curtain in 1946 to describe what was happening in europe with respect to the spread of communisum and the polarisation of idealogies. I would suggest any change made to an airfield following the end of the second war could be referred to as a cold war event.
Has it ended? well good question.....

Well here is my interpretation for what its worth:
The Cold War was a period of East-West competition, tension and conflict, short of full-scale war characterized by mutual perceptions of hostile intention between military and political alliances. The period is also characterized by real wars, often called 'proxy wars' because they were fought by Soviet allies, rather than the USSR itself. Other characteristics were the competition for influence in the Third World and the Space Race, but the most important was the Superpower Arms Race.
There is no definite date for the beginning of the Cold War, important turning points are believed to be:
The Yalta Conference between 4 and 11 February 1945
The end of War in Europe in May 1945
Churchill's Fulton speech on 5 March 1946 (Iron Curtain Speech)
Similarly there are disagreements regarding the end of the Cold War. It could be that the 1985 appointment of Gorbachev as General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, was the beginning of the end, or the Reagan build-up of the Star Wars project that eventually drove the Soviets to bankruptcy. There is also the possibility that the Cold War began and ended at different times in different places.

My definition of it is 1948 to 1992. This based purely on that tangible events seemed to have happened between these years, even though the politics of it were around before and after.

Did quite a bit of research on this when I produced a Cold War timeline for our museum.
My take on it is (from our Cold War timeline):
1945
·4th to 11th February - Yalta Conference (Genesis of Cold War).
·8th May – World War II ends in Europe.
·16th July - First US ‘A’-Bomb tested.
·6th & 9th August - ‘A’-Bomb dropped on Hiroshima & Nagasaki.
·16th July to 2nd August - Potsdam Conference: Harry Truman, Joseph Stalin and Clement Attlee divide up and organise the reconstruction of Europe following the end of World War II.
COLD WAR BEGINS.
1989
·20th January - George H. W. Bush is inaugurated as the 41st President of the United States.
·2nd February - Soviet troops complete withdrawal from Afghanistan.
·4th June - Tiananmen Square protests are crushed by the communist Chinese government.
·9th November - Revolutions in Eastern Europe: Soviet reforms and their state of bankruptcy have allowed Eastern Europe to rise up against the Communist governments there. The Berlin Wall is torn down and other East German border posts opened.
·3rd December - At the end of the Malta Conference, Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev and US President George H. W. Bush declare that a long lasting peaceful era has begun. Many observers regard this summit as the official beginning of the end of the Cold War.
COLD WAR ENDS.

Peter I think your right, even when Russia was a monarchy Britain has had a strained relationship with Russia. It did improve under Gorbachev, but since then it has become cooler.
