Where is the best place to find out dates of when airfields were open and closed?
I have just been trying to find out Cheddington and some reports say 1917 others say 1940's, I can only assume that some flying activity during World War One took place there.
Station diarys held at Hendon must be the most reliable way, as they detail when various buildings etc were started and completed, plus operational dates. Not sure how many airfieds they cover though.
The subject of airfield closure has to be one of the most inaccurately reported aspects of airfield history there is. The most knowledgeable person I have spoken to on this subject has to be Kenneth Bannerman of ABCT. He can offer definitive dates of when former military airfields were last used and not necessarily their official closure dates. Jurby in the IoM being just one example.
The only sure way of getting dates for RAF airfields closing to flying has to be the Form 540 (Operations Record Book) assuming it exists at the time of the closure. Often opening dates are reported inaccurately too. One has to read the 540 properly as oten it is just the SHQ opening - not necessary the airfield. Everything is fine if you say exactly what you mean such as SHQ opened on such a such date, followed by the airfield on blah blah blah date.
You can tell a builder from an archaeologist by the size of his trowel. Mine is a small one!
Regarding Cheddington , my guess is that you will find that a site in the general area (not necessarily the exact same location) was used - or set up for use- in WW1 - possibly late in the war.
Many sites were prepared for use in the latter stages of WW1 but not all saw any actual service.
A good example is Chattis Hill used by the RFC 1917-1919 then a nearby site used again in WW2 for dispersed Spitfire assembly and flight testing...
In March 96 RAF Turnhouse closed, or that was when the parade was held to mark the closure. I visited Turnhouse to have a look round in August 96 and got talking to the security boles from Rentokil in the guardroom. I saw a document from June 96 that listed how the last personnel (including the CO) were travelling to Northwood as JMOTS was moving there.
So its not just RAF airfields where it get gets confusing as to official closure dates.
Just where are F540s and war diaries held? I would have thought TNA but I could be wrong. And just how long are they held for before they can be seen? At Leuchars we had the station war diary in the vault in int. No I dont know why it was still on the unit, and it hadnt been declassified!!! A chap was writing a history of Leuchars and someone had to sit with him while he made notes.
All F540's are at TNA and the Squadron ORB's are available to view, albeit with a logo across the pages, unless you pay for a download. A caveat to that is the the more recent decades have not been released under the 30 year rule (I think) and are either held by the unit, if still active or AHB. Station and other non-squadron ORB's are not availble to view online but it would be interesting to find out if they were in the pipeline.
Sadly post war ORB's seem to be sparse on information with many squadrons only completing a monthly summary under various key subjects, e.g. Operations, Training, Admin etc. I suspect this was probably way it was supposed to be completed in peacetime but I haven't seen a post-war instruction on completing 540's
