I found this brief entry in Finningleys 25 OTU's ORB, AIR29/668 this week:
27/4/42: "Troop of Valentine tanks of 30th Armoured Bde, arrived for trials of Jefferies bombs at Misson range in conjunction with No 5 Group aircraft."
I don't recall reading/hearing the name 'Jeffries' associated with bombs but wonder if it was a code name for the 'J' Bomb that was an incendiary bomb?

I wonder if this is the 9lb AT bomb that was dropped in attached pairs? They did make a practice version of it, can't recall the date, so I wonder if the practice ones were used as a dropping test. I have a feeling there is another AVIA file from around that date on anti-tank bomb tests so this may be the same test.
As for the rewards, I have come across a couple of papers on reward requests post war and they were from, then, serving officers who I thought couldn't claim such rewards. I assume Jeffries was a civilian during the war?

Just twigged! Jeffries was one of a pair of inventors (the other was Watts) who devised the shaped charge bomb and launcher that became the PIAT (projector Infantry Anti-Tank)
Extract from a historical report:
In 1940 and 1941 armours thicker than 44mm were often encountered and the
British anti-tank rifles were inadequate for their intended task. The
grenade principle of using a discharger cup on a rifle made for too light a
projectile and too short a range. Several designers bent their minds to the
task and two prototype anti-tank devices appeared in 1941, both very similar
in appearance and principle. One was designed by a man called Watts, the
other by Jeffries. The launchers were tubes of thin sheet steel containing
the firing spring and trigger mechanism. At the front was a trough to hold
the bomb and the spigot projected down the middle of the trough. At the
other end of the tube was a shoulder pad. Simple aperture sights were
fitted. The bombs had a hollow tail boom with a small cartridge at the front -
* end. The hollow charge warhead was larger in the Jeffries version.
So, as PNK says the Misson trial was probably of a shaped charge anti-tank bomb but I don't think that it ever came into service unless it was adopted for anti-submarine under another name.
I had a quick look at the TNA file and the Jeffries bomb was indeed an air dropped anti-tank bomb based on the hollow charge. The 9lb AT bomb (not yet clear if this was the Jeffries bomb) was produced (50,000) some went to the North African front and some actually went to Bomber Command. In use, however they were not satisfactory as they were prone to sympathetic detonation, sometimes in flight and also the ballistics meant that the full effect of the shaped charge was only successful in very few strikes. It was decided that luck was the major factor rather than the accuracy of the pilot. Bomber Command certainly dropped the weapon from its list of bombs in 1943, which explains its presence in the bomb AP. I will go through the file later in the week so will be able to sort out the sequence of events more accurately.
The 9lb AT bomb was also tested on a white painted train which was at steam on a part of the same railway line that was used for Highball tunnel tests.

A lot of the original tests were carried out at M.D.1. which I believe was at Whitchurch, which I have in my mind in the Home Counties. It was not used for air tests so I haven't looked into it. Was Jeffries a Brigadier as a Brigadier Jeffries attended the locomotive tests?
