Army Air Corp base that was located near Blackpool

Can anyone help me locate an Army Air Corp base that was located near Blackpool,
England?

My dad was a sheet metal mechanic out of a base near Blackpool - he talked
about visiting there often. (he even went back for a visit in the 80's)

I think he was in the 8th but I'm not sure.

Any information you could give me would be helpful.

Thanx

Are we talking about RAF Weeton, the technical training school (trade), near Blackpool?

You can tell a builder from an archaeologist by the size of his trowel. Mine is a small one!

By Army Air Corps do you mean US Army Air Corps? (you mention the 8th which is a clue).

My guess would be that your dad served at Warton, just down the coast from Blackpool. This was the home of Base Area Depot 2 which was one of the main US maintenance bases in Europe during WW2. As well as repairs they also prepared aircraft shipped or flown over from the States for active duty.

Warton has been one of the centres of UK combat aircraft design since the war, being home to the Canberra, Lightning, Tornado and Typhoon. It is currently owned and operated by BAE Systems and is the HQ of their military aircraft division.

Hope that helps,

Peter
