Number of runways was created by REF

Why does Henstridge have 5 runways and how many other airfields have more than the usual three runways? Was there a reason for this? I think Portreath has 4 runways.

Naval airfields seem to have often had multiple (short) runways ....(EG Yeovilton, Gosport,Predannack)

Could it be because naval aviators would generally be used to landing directly into wind (carrier ops?)...I don't know but seems feasable.

Yep I'd say!

You can tell a builder from an archaeologist by the size of his trowel. Mine is a small one!

I'd agree as well. Some also had deck markings painted on them to improve the quality for training.

Yes - there was a dummy deck (still there) at Henstridge for the practise of ADDLs(Assisted Dummy Deck Landings).

Looking at places like portreath and preddanack, the "shorter" runways don't look that short compared to other airfields though. Henstridge may have shorter runways. Wasn't the Dummy deck there restored or am I dreaming things again?

Yes(No not dreaming ) - and it is plainly visible in GoogleEarth - the light portion in the middle of 07/25

Naval runways were not as wide as RAF built ones either being only xxx yards wide (see who knows before I edit). I did read that the number was to cope with the into the wind training but I can't find the reference or I haven't looked hard enough! This doesn't apply to hand-me-downs though.
Aldergrove had 4 before it was redesigned.
